What will you learn

You will learn how to keep a Sony XDCAM deck (PDW-1500, PDW-R1 or PDW-V1) in good working order, on a day-to-day basis. This course does not cover maintenance of the optical drive itself, and as such, is designed to complement a support contract or the use of the seven-year warranty on the drive.

Who should attend

This course is intended for technicians and engineers wanting to maintain any Sony XDCAM deck in good working order. This includes customer technicians and engineers, third party support personnel, authorised service centre engineers, etc. Prior knowledge in basic television or broadcast technology is essential. Prior knowledge of maintaining professional video tape machines is beneficial.

Course contents

Technology

This part of the course studies the technology behind the Sony range of XDCAM studio decks.

Controls, connectors and indicators

This part of the course describes all the controls, connectors and indicators found on the Sony range of XDCAM decks.

Menus

This part of the course looks at the setup menus explaining the use of each item, and the use of the maintenance menus for checking correct operation of the unit.

Signal Flow

The flow of the signal from board to board is covered in this section explaining the function of each board and guidance on fault location.

Network operation

Connection to a computer network is an important part of XDCAM operation and workflow. This part of the course explains the various controls and settings within an XDCAM deck for computer network operation and some of the pitfalls related to this operation.

Using PDZ-1

This part of the course explains how to use the Sony PDZ-1 XDCAM browser.

Understanding errors and faults

Part of the course is devoted to understanding the standard error codes, and how to recognise faults in the drive.

Cleaning and upgrade procedures

This part of the course explains the recommended routine cleaning operations required to keep the deck in good working condition, and the firmware upgrade procedures.
